Itineraries

Day 1

ARRIVAL TO CHILAW

Munneswaram Temple
Munneswaram Temple is the place where Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva after committing the grave sin of Brahmahasti (the killing of a Brahmin). Lord Shiva blessed Rama and instructed him to install and worship four Shiva lingams at five specific locations to absolve his sin. This temple is one of the most important Ramayana-related sites in Sri Lanka.

Manavari Temple
Manavari Temple is the first site where Lord Rama installed a Shiva lingam and worshipped it. This lingam is now known as Ramalingam, as it was consecrated by Rama himself. Both Munneswaram and Manavari Temples hold great significance in the Ramayana trail across Sri Lanka.

Day 2

Trincomalee

Anuradhapura
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cradle of the ancient Sinhalese Buddhist civilization. Anuradhapura is renowned for its magnificent stupas, ancient monasteries, and vast reservoirs, showcasing the architectural and engineering marvels of early Sri Lanka.

Thirukoneswaram Kovil – Trincomalee
Believed to have been built by Sage Agastya under the guidance of Lord Shiva, who was moved by the devotion of King Ravana. This temple is unique, as it is said to be a rare instance where the deity built a temple for his devotee as a sign of divine reward.

Day 3

Kandy

Dambulla

Matale
Stop for a visit to a Spice Garden in Matale, where you can learn about Sri Lanka's renowned spices. Enjoy lunch en route.

Kandy
Arrive in Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This exotic hill city is surrounded by lush mountains and centered around a serene lake.

Activities:

Day 4

Kandy

Day in Kandy – Leisure & Exploration

Enjoy a relaxed day as part of your 8-day Sri Lanka Ramayana Tour, with two nights in the historic city of Kandy. This day offers a balance of light sightseeing and leisure.

Recommended Activities:

  • Visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to observe and interact with rescued elephants

  • Explore the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya (suggested 1-hour visit)

  • Take a Kandy city sightseeing tour including key cultural and historical landmarks

Day 5

Nuwara Eliya

Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple – Ramboda

This temple is believed to mark the spot near Ravana Goda, where Lord Hanuman began his search for Sita Devi. Revered as a key site in the Ramayana trail of Sri Lanka, the Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple in Ramboda honors Hanuman’s devotion and his crucial role in the epic. The temple, maintained by Chinmaya Mission, also features a towering Hanuman statue and offers a peaceful spiritual atmosphere amidst the misty hills.

Day 6

Katharagama

Divurumpola Temple – This sacred Buddhist site is traditionally recognized as the location where Sita Devi underwent the Agni Pariksha (fire ordeal) to prove her purity to Lord Rama. She emerged unscathed, symbolizing her innocence. It's one of the most revered Ramayana-related sites in Sri Lanka.

Sita Amman Temple & Ashoka Vatika (Hakgala Botanical Gardens) – The Sita Amman Temple in Nuwara Eliya is the only temple in Sri Lanka dedicated exclusively to Princess Sita. The surrounding area, now the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, is believed to be the ancient Ashoka Vatika where she was held captive by Ravana.

Day 7

Colombo

Kataragama – Visit the revered Kataragama Temple, a significant pilgrimage site dedicated to God Skanda (Murugan), worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists.

Ussangoda – En route to Colombo, explore the Ussangoda Ramayana site, believed to be one of the landing strips used by Ravana's Pushpaka Vimana. The area’s distinctive scorched red soil adds to its mythical significance.

Galle:

  • Visit Rumassala, believed to be a part of the Sanjeevani Mountain brought by Hanuman during the Ramayana.

  • Explore Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its blend of European and South Asian architectural styles.
